3 Tips For Letting Go Of The Past And Making Room For The Future
This year has been a year of change and personal growth, but it’s also been several months of me holding myself back and falling back into old patterns and beliefs. Sometimes subconsciously and then consciously, meaning sometimes I’m not aware that I’m doing it until I am aware.
And what I’ve learned over and over again is that you have to let go of your old self in order to create room for your new self.
Most of the time, people already feel like they don’t have enough time for all the things in their lives. Family and friends, career, social life, self-care, money, etc. They feel stressed out and overwhelmed. And so they continue on this hamster wheel, thinking that once they get to a certain point or once they achieve a certain thing, it’ll all suddenly get better.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way.
Because until you do something differently, you’re going to continue getting the same results.
And if you continue being your old self, your life isn’t going to change. And why would it? So if you want to change, you have to do something differently.
So, how do you start letting go of your old self to create room for your new one?
1. Make a list of where you’re currently spending your time and energy.
For a whole week, track your time. You can do this with Toggle (an online time tracker), with your Google Calendar, or get my daily planner + time tracker freebie here. Take notes of where you’re spending your time - not where you think you’re spending your time and energy, but actually where it’s going.
How often are you getting distracted? How often are you reaching for your phone? How often is your brain coming up with reasons of why you shouldn’t be doing it? How often do you listen to your mind?
People always say, “Where did the week go?” at the end of the week - well, here’s your chance to find out.
2. Spend time with people you want to be like.
Do an honest inventory of the people you spend the most time with and an inventory of yourself too. What is the collective atmosphere and energy of your group? What do you spend most of your time talking about? What activities do you do when you’re with them? How do they make you feel? How do you make them feel?
One of the most common reasons why people give up too easily and/or too soon is because of the group they surround themselves with. A common example of this is someone starting to change their lifestyle by working out and eating healthier. It’s much easier if you surround yourself with people who like being active and who will support you than if you were around people who invited you to happy hour every day and question why you even want to change your lifestyle.
Because we truly are the average of the 5 people we spend the most time with.

3. A clean environment = a mind of clarity.
Have you ever looked like a pile of dishes, a messy room, and a cluttered desktop feeling a sense of clarity and calmness? I haven’t. Just writing out that sentence and imaging it all is stressing me out a bit.
When your environment is clear, you allow your mind to think more clearly, for your body to move more freely, and for your soul to hear its intuition.
To create flow and movement in our lives, we have to take out the things, energy, and people that are blocking it.
I also recommend reading Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself by Dr. Joe Dispenza. It’s a book I’m currently reading and he really goes in-depth how to let go of your old self so you can create a new one. (For more book recommendations.)
