How To Stay Committed To Your Goals And New Year's Resolutions
It's that time of the year again - when everyone is in #newyearnewme mode.
Chances are, you have a goals and new year's resolutions list of your own.
But how do you stay committed even after January is over?
Because we all know the story of how everyone is at the gym on the first day of the new year and long gone by the time March rolls around.
How to stay committed to your goals and New Year's Resolutions:
1. Decide that this is what you want.
You have to decide (like really decide) that this is what you want and be crystal clear on what you're trying to accomplish. No wishy washy goals here; trust me, they don't work. Also, don't overcommit and try to accomplish a million things at once; that doesn't work either.
Also, keep your goals SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely), because the more clear you are on your goals, the less overwhelmed you'll feel about them.
It's like saying you'll start going to the gym, but when are you going? In the morning or in the evening? Are you going to workout by yourself, go to classes, or work with a personal trainer? What are you going to eat after you workout? How long does it take to you get there?
You don't need to overplan, but you do need to have a good idea of what you're doing. Otherwise you're going to let yourself slide here and there - and suddenly it's March and you haven't accomplished any of your goals.
2. Reserve engineer who you want to be and know you why.
Let's say two of your goals are to eat healthier and exercise more (using them as an example since they're the most popular New Year's Resolutions).
What does someone who eats healthy and exercises regularly do? Think about what type of person they are, what they do in their daily lives outside of eating and exercising, what kind of people they hang out with, etc.
One of the most common reasons why people don't follow through on their goals is because of their environment.
We are the average of the 5 people we spend the most time with, so if all your friends are eating fried foods and Chinese take out everyday, it's hard to switch over to sweet potatoes and cauliflower rice. I mean, let's be realistic here.
I love my green smoothies and yogurt parfaits, but if someone's dangling pizza in front of me, you can beat I'm going to choose that slice of pizza.
Also, ask yourself why you want to be someone who eats healthier and exercises more. Honestly, why does that matter to you? And it can't be because of other people either (ex. you're changing for other people.) No, why are you changing for yourself? And be honest with yourself! It's not like you have to share that information with other people anyway.
3. Believe in yourself & change your mindset.
Things are going to go wrong. Something is going to happen.
Maybe you accidentally miss a day or tell yourself you can just skip a couple of days - and if you don't believe in yourself and you haven't committed, your new habits and goals aren't going to stick.
Because... what's the point, right?
Did you really expect yourself to change?
(The answer should be yes, by the way).
You have to mentally, physically, and spiritually prepare yourself. You have to be willing to get back up and keep going even when you fall, because you will fall.
But be consistent and keep showing up.
It will get easier. It will be better. It will become like second nature to you.
4. Put some skin in the game.
Whether that means putting money into a jar every time you don't follow through on something or checking in with someone for weekly accountability, you need to put some skin in the game.
How are you going to hold yourself accountable?
Because if you let yourself be wishy washy about it, it's not going to happen.
It'll be the same ol' story with the same ol' goals next year.
After signing up for both free and paid courses, I'm going to say that I put a lot more time, effort, and energy into my paid courses. In fact, I actually showed up for those.
Whenever I received high priced value courses for free, I never finished them. Because well, there was nothing really to lose. It's not like I paid for them or spent much time thinking about whether I should invest in the course.
(Yes, I'm one of those person that will read every single word on your sales page before making a purchase.)
5. Follow through on what you say you're going to do.
If you're the type of person who does what they say they're going to do, then you already know you're going to follow through with something.
But what if you aren't?
What if you've set goals in the past but never followed through with them?
I use to be one of those people. I set goals every year (sometimes every month) but never followed through with them, so at one point, they just felt like wishy washy goals.
I definitely got more serious about my #goalsgame in 2017 - and guess what? I actually follow through on what I say I'm going to do now. Actually, I try not to say things but just do things - because actions speak louder than works anyway.
Become the kind of person who can trust and believe their own words.
6. Get back up when you fall, and keep going.
You are going to fail and stumble, but that does not make you a failure.
In the past, you might've given up after trying a few times. But this year? Choose to keep going - even if it really, really sucks in the moment.
Because guess what? If other people can do it, so can you.
Does that mean it's going to be easy? No, it probably wasn't easy for them either.
Good things don't come to people who just sit around and write down goals but then don't show up. In order to accomplish your goals, you actually need to do the work.
You need to be okay with the journey not being perfect, because it is not going to be perfect.
It's going to be messy, you might feel like an imposter at times, but you need to be wiling to show up anyway.
Because I can tell you right now that wishy washy day dreaming is definitely not going to cut it.
