Hi Alyx! Please tell us a bit about you and your story.
Hi guys! Thanks so much for having me. I the founder and designer over at Made by Alyx. I specialize in crafting unique brands with an emphasis on hand-lettering, illustration, and pattern design. I love getting to break out the art supplies and work with my hands. I live in a little beach town in southern Orange County with my husband, our Boston terrier pup, Bruce, and we have a baby boy on the way!
How did you become a designer and creator? Was there a specific moment when you decided this was what you were going to do?
I grew up in an extremely creative family. There was always art projects happening at the kitchen table. I can’t remember a time I didn’t want to be an artist of some sort. I never really considered not having a creative job/career. My mom is a graphic designer too and I always joked that I wanted to be an artist but not in the same way as my mom. But here I am. Sometimes we even do some work together which is really special and fun.
I absolutely LOVE your work. Selfish question here and maybe you get this a lot but… how did you work with big brands like Minted and FitFabFun?
Thank you so much! So pretty crazy... FabFitFun found me on instagram. They liked a couple of the prints I had done for another company and wanted me to create something for their Summer 2016 box. It was such a fun project and such an amazing team to work with. As for Minted, since they are a crowd sourced site, I submitted a few designs for their Holiday 2016 challenge and was selected. They liked my illustration work and then even commissioned me to work on a few kids products.
As women, I think there’s a lot of topics we’re afraid to talk about. What is something that has been on your heart recently?
Hmm... maybe success vs. happiness. I have heard a lot of people think to be successful you must sacrifice some level of happiness. I think I used to even believe this. But I couldn’t have been more wrong. Happiness and doing what your passionate about may not technically have monetary value but it has tremendous value in my life. I think people forget about that or are afraid of it.
The online world can be a noisy place sometimes. How do you stay authentic and true to who you are?
I try my best to not be consumed by it. An online presence is essential to my business but not to me as a human being and I try my hardest to remember that. Honestly, I just strive to do work I love and want to look at. I feel like if I am doing that, then I am staying true to myself.
What’s the best life advice you’ve ever received from someone else?
Create something everyday even if it sucks. I cannot remember who told me this - it may have been in a college art class - but it has really stuck with me.
Can you share your own nugget of wisdom with our readers?
Be open to where life takes you. I would have never in a million years thought this is what I would be doing. You can plan out your life perfectly but that doesn’t allow for any spontaneity or sweet surprise. I am so much more in love with what I am doing that what I thought I would be doing at this point in my life.
What’s next for you in your journey? How can we support you, and where can we find you online?
I am finally launching my new website & shop. I am going to be selling art prints and some downloadable art bundles for other creatives. So check that out at: Made x Alyx and be sure follow me on instagram @alyxhouse for updates and discount codes.. And in my personal life, expecting a baby boy - any day now ha! So look for some baby spam up on my feed very, very soon.
Thanks so much for letting me interview you, Alyx. One last question before we leave, what does being a wholehearted woman mean to you?
To me being a wholehearted woman, means staying true to yourself, having confidence, and supporting other women. It’s about doing your thing and supporting others as they do theirs.
