Wholehearted Wednesdays with Photographer Taylor Mae
Hi Taylor Mae! Please tell us a bit about you. Did you always know you wanted to be a photographer? What has been your biggest learning experience so far?
Photography was something I never thought I would end up doing. Choosing photography as my career was the most beautifully unexpected thing I have ever done, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
While I was blindly starting my own business, the chaos of reality weighed heavy, but that’s part of what’s so wonderful about my job. One thing that has been a huge learning experience for me is accepting that it is okay to fail.
When most people hear the word “failure”, they associate it with being unsuccessful. I don't.
As a young entrepreneur I have taught myself to take risks, and a lot of the time, I fail on my first, second, or even third, attempt. But that's a good thing. We learn from our mistakes and if we always played it safe, we wouldn't grow. Failure means that you had the courage to go for something even though you didn't know how it would turn out.
Failure gives you the opportunity to try new things, open new doors, and it gets you that much closer to your end goal.
Everyone has their own creative style, and I absolutely love the way you photograph and edit! How did you “find” your style?
Finding my style has been so much fun because I can do whatever I want and call it mine. The way I found my “look” was creating what I love and sticking to it.
When creating my brand, I made it a goal to show who I am through my style. The way I did that is making an aesthetic that I feel matches my life. For example, pictures of coffee, fall colors, my home, and happy couples are some of my favorite things, so that's what I post.
Something I would encourage everyone to do when “finding their style” is to take advantage of how much freedom you have. Do what you think looks good and own it. It's important to not just focus on what your viewers think in order to stand out.
Be authentic and embrace your personality through your brand's look.
As women, I think there’s a lot of topics we’re afraid to talk about. What is something that has been on your heart recently?
Us women are freaking amazing. I know so many women who are incredibly driven and successful, but I feel like there are times we are treated a bit unfair in the professional world.
There have been times where I feel I am not taken as serious as a man in my profession. Although this issue isn't so big that I can't work past it, it’s still frustrating to not receive certain opportunities because I am a woman.
I believe women are just as capable of being successful as men.
The online world can be a noisy place sometimes. How do you stay authentic and true to who you are?
My personal relationship with God keeps me sane. Having that relationship reminds me everyday that this world is not about Instagram likes, how established I am, or how many followers I have. My real satisfaction comes from the Lord. Keeping this my first priority helps me stay true to who I am.
Everyday when I wake up I have a choice on where my focus is. I think social media is so amazing and innovative. Without it, my business wouldn't be where it is today, but there comes a point where it can distracting. Not investing too much of my time and feelings into social media helps keep my focus straight. Getting too wrapped up in the online world can be destructive to you and your business.
What’s the best life advice you’ve ever received from someone else?
The best life advice I have received is to always listen to those older and more experienced than I am. It’s important to take advantage of the knowledge others have to offer.
Can you share your own nugget of wisdom with our readers?
Take time for yourself. Don't get too wrapped up in life and your job, because you will start to lose your passion. Even when life is crazy, remember why you do what you do and never stop putting in 100%.
What’s next for you in your journey? How can we support you, and where can we find you online?
My next Journey is destination wedding photography. This is something I am so passionate about and I have made it a goal for 2018. I would love some support and the way you can do that is shooting me an uplifting email, recommending Taylor Mae Photography, and following my social media. You can find me on instagram @taylorrmaaee and also on my website.
Thanks so much for letting me interview you, Taylor. One last question before we leave, what does being a wholehearted woman mean to you?
