Why I Went With Hello Bonsai Over HoneyBook & Dubsado

You’ve probably booked your first client and now you’re researching the best way to send out invoices and contracts. And you’re wondering, “Is Hello Bonsai really worth it?”

What are the pros and cons to Hello Bonsai? Is it the best option? Is it worth $19/mo?

Disclosure: My affiliate link for Hello Bonsai is included in this article; if you sign up using my affiliate link, you’ll be supporting my coffee fund, so from one freelancer to another, thank you and I hope you enjoy using Hello Bonsai as much as I do!

(P.S. Don’t worry; this is an honest review. I wouldn’t be using something I didn’t absolutely love.)

Just a month ago, I was like you.

While I was researching, I came upon Hello Bonsai and the first thing I immediately noticed was their user interface and experience.

Here is how your dashboard will look:

Beautiful, right?

As a designer, I place a lot of emphasis on design and aesthetics. I like to keep things clean, simple, and beautiful.

I know first-hand that as a business owner and freelancer, you have a lot of expenses. And every month, they can add up quickly.

Hello Bonsai is $19/mo, whereas HoneyBook is $34/mo and Dubsado is $30/mo.

At first, I tried out Dubsado because instead of doing a time based trial, they allow you to try out your first 3 clients for free, which I thought was pretty cool.

However, if I’m being completely honest, I couldn’t figure out how to use Dubsado to save my life (or in this case, time). And when I asked my friends, most of them said they hired someone to teach them how to use the platform.

… but isn’t hiring someone to teach you how to do something that’s supposed to be so simple counter-intuitive?

Automation should save you time, not add more hours to your workload.

So, I signed up for a free trial at Hello Bonsai and decided to give it a try.

And let’s just say I’m so glad I did. My clients sign their contracts and pay their invoices within 24 hours, and it’s super easy for them too! No hassle, no fuss.

What is Hello Bonsai?

According to their website, it’s a way to “Put your freelancing on autopilot. All-in-one freelancing solution for the world's best creative freelancers.”

Hello Bonsai offers: proposals, contracts, invoices and easy payments, time tracking, expenses and reporting, and a peace of mind.

My Honest Opinion

If you couldn’t tell already, I’m a pretty big fan of Hello Bonsai, because it really has streamlined and simplified my client onboarding process.

I can send a new client their contract and invoice within 5-10 minutes, and there’s nothing more that I love than saving time and being efficient (you can ask my friends about that).

After you have your contract template(s) set up, it’s just a few clicks and your contract is on its way to your client’s inbox.

And after sending my clients their contracts and invoices, most of them (if not all) signed and paid their deposit the next day.

** If you’re a client of mine, I just want to say thank you!! You are amazing, and I’m absolutely honored to be working with you / worked with you.

Plus, Hello Bonsai makes it super easy for you to create new clients in your dashboard.

As a freelancer and creative business owner, I’m sure you’ve heard of many horror stories (or maybe have had a few yourself) where someone had to chase down clients down for payment.

When you streamline your process and present yourself as a professional, people are more likely to treat you as a professional.

My favorite thing about Hello Bonsai is that they don’t overcomplicate things. Let’s be honest — as a business owner and freelancer, you already have enough things on your plate to deal with.

Because you know what’s also not a good idea? Making life more complicated than it has to be.

A few other awesome things about Hello Bonsai:

  • When you start up an invoice, they allow: one-time, recurring, or recurring auto payment.

    • The one downside is that you can’t do split payments on an invoice, but you can just create separate invoices, which is what I do. (One for their deposit and another for final payment.)

  • They have templated contracts you can use and easily send to your clients to legally e-sign. In other words, Hello Bonsai helps protect you and your business!

  • Hello Bonsai provides an easy to use proposal template, and they have a section for: content and objectives, timeline, and why your clients should work with you.

  • Basically everything you need handed to you on a silver platter. And for only $19/mo? It’s a no brainer in my book.

All in all, I think you should give Hello Bonsai a shot. You can try it absolutely free with this link for 2 weeks.

What do you have to lose? Nothing really, but you have so much to gain like… your sanity, peace of mind, and time to sign on future clients!

And after you’ve tried Hello Bonsai for yourself, let me know what you think!

Love it? Hate it? It’s okay, you can be honest with me. Let me know in the comments below.

Everyone likes different things. That’s why there’s Walmart and Target, or Asana and Trello.

There’s something for everyone, but I’m pretty confident you’ll love Hello Bonsai just as much as me.
